Description: In less than four years, we expect to see scientific codes running on the Blue Waters petascale platform at UIUC. This talk will outline the technical and economic trends that are driving the design of such platforms and discuss the current evolution of hardware and software for supercomputing. Finally, we shall describe the challenges that NCSA faces in ensuring that Blue Waters can be used productively to advance science.
